Christmas Wreath (Free Pattern!)

I completed this wreath a few of years ago and have been using it to decorate my house around this time every year since.

Here is the free, step-by-step tutorial, with tons of photos to help you along the way! Please remember I am using US terms.

You will need:

  • Hook: 5.5mm
  • Yarn: Sugar 'n Cream Twists Barnboard; Vanna's Glamour Lion Brand Red Stone; Vanna's GlamourLion Brand Diamond
  • 14in. Foam Wreath

Chain 23 with Sugar 'n Cream Twists Barnboard

Round 1: HDC in 2nd chain from hook and for rest of chain. Ch1, turn.
Continue until work measures approximately 17 inches or a little over halfway of the total desired length.

Switch colors. You will be working with Vanna's Glamour Lion Brand Red Stone AND Diamond yarns together as if they were one.

Continue HDC until entire work measures approximately 30 inches or until you get to a point where your work will fit snug around the foam wreath.

Fasten off.

Sew crocheted work onto 14in. foam wreath.

  • Hook: 3.5mm
  • Yarn: Caron Dark Sage
  • You will be making 3 Holly Leaves
Chain 20

Round 1: SC in 2nd ch. from hook and in next 3 sts. HDC in next 3 sts. DC in next 2 sts. 4DC in next st. DC in next 2 sts. HDC in next 3 sts. SC in next 4 sts:

Repeat the same pattern on the opposite side of your work:

Again, that's SC in the first 4 sts. HDC in next 3 sts. DC in next 2 sts. 4DC in next st. DC in next 2 sts. HDC in next 3 sts. SC in next 4 sts. The last stitch should be a slst.

For the little leaf spikes, ch4, slst in next st. Slst in next st. Slst in next st and SC in same st. Ch4. slst in next st. Slst in next st. Slst in next st and SC in same st.

Repeat this until you have 7 holly leaf spikes. Your last spike should end with one slst in the next st.

Now you will start working on the opposite side.
Start with a slst in the next st.

Slst in next st again. Slst in next st and SC in same st. Ch4.

Slst in next 2 st. Slst in next st and SC in same st. Ch4.

The pattern is the same as it was on the other side. Once again, you will want to complete 7 spikes on this side.

So just to review: slst, slst, slst + Sc + Ch4. Repeat.

Once you Ch4 to complete your 7th spike, slst in the next st. Slst in the next stitch again.

The leaf will have 7 spikes on each side plus the top spike.

Now you will work on the holly leaf vein that will travel all the way down.

Insert your crochet hook through the space on the top spike, yarn over and pull through (this will be a slst)

You will notice that the path of the holly leaf vein is already formed through little spaces. You will be using slip stitching through those spaces all the way down.

Like so:

This is what your final product should look like:

7 spikes on either side - 1 top-most spike - Slip stitches all the way down, forming the middle leaf vein

This picture above made it look so that there are only 6 spikes on the right side, but it's because one of the spikes folded in a funny way. Oops!

Repeat this pattern 2 more times for a total of 3 holly leaves.

  • Hook: 4.5mm
  • Yarn: Caron White; Caron Dark Sage
  • You will be making 2 Bells
  • 6 small jingle bells (save for later, when entire project is being assembled)
The bells are easy-peasy!
With Caron White, Ch4, join with slst in 1st ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch3, 11 DC in ring, join with a slst on top of 1st DC (12 DC).
Round 2: Ch3, DC in next st, 2 DC in next st. *DC in each of next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st,
Repeat from * all the way around, join with a slst on top of first DC (16 DC).

Round 3: Ch3, DC in each st around, join with a slst on top of first DC (16 DC).
Round 4: Repeat Round 3
Round 5: Ch3, DC in same st, 2 DC in next st and in each st around, join with a slst on top of first DC (16 DC).

Round 6: Change colors (you are now using Caron Dark Sage), slst in first st, SC in same st, SC in next st and in each st around. Finish off.

Darn in your ends.

  • Small PomPom Maker
  • Yarn: Lion Brand BonBons Party Red
  • Scissors
  • You will be making a total of 3 pompoms.

There is no secret to making these pompoms. All you need are the materials above and a little patience.
Wrap your yarn in the pompom makers. The more yarn you use, the fluffier your pompom will be.
I made one pompom slightly bigger than the others simply by wrapping the yarn around the pompom maker a few more times.

  • Hook: 4.5mm
  • Yarn: Vanna's Glamour Lion Brand Diamond
  • Hot Glue Gun

Ch.80

Round 1: HDC in 2nd ch from hook, HDC in each ch all the way down, ch1, turn.
Round 2-7: HDC in each st, ch1, turn.
Round 8: HDC in each st, fasten off, darn in ends.

To assemble the bow, fold each end towards the middle of your work

Using the hot glue gun, glue the ends together, as pictured above.

Now you will wrap a single strand of the same yarn several times around the center of the bow.

This is the funnest part: assembling everything together!

Let's start with the bow, since it will be the anchor for all the other parts of the wreath.

I wanted the two different colors of the wreath to be kind of off-center, so I chose to place the bow towards the end of the sparkly half of the wreath. I attached it to the wreath with the hot glue gun.

I played around with the positioning of the Holly Leaves until I was happy with the results. I pinned them in place and used the hot glue gun to secure them. I gave it some time to dry and then removed the pins.

Next, I used my hot glue gun again to attach the pompoms to the holly leaves.

I tied a string of yarn to the center of the wreath, through one of the HDCs. I fastened the string with a knot.

I pulled one string through the top of one bell and the other through the top of the second bell.

I placed a dab of hot glue to the inside of the bells in order to secure the string, allowing the bells to dangle from the wreath.

Once the glue dried, I drew the strings through 3 jingle bells and secure everything with a knot. This was probably the hardest part out of the entire project because I bought very teeny tiny jingle bells and it was difficult to get the yarn to go through.

And for the final product...

Please let me know if you have questions about this project. I would love to see how yours turns out!
